Where is the distortion festival?

The idea of ultra-mobility and the tag-line "Distortion — A Celebration of Copenhagen Nightlife" was born in September 1998 for a one-night party in the nightclub Mantra in Tivoli, Copenhagen, established by Thomas Fleurquin.[3] Distortion became a five-day mobile festival in June 2000. In the period 1998–2007, Distortion was a small, chaotic, not-fully-legal five-day party-crawl through Copenhagen, mainly for the local underground art and music scene and club culture professionals. In 2007, after gathering 2000 guests at a single street party for the first time, Distortion decided to go professional and entered a collaboration with the Copenhagen City Council and the Copenhagen Police: Nus/Nus – the Distortion Secretariat was established.[4] In 2011, according to the Copenhagen Police, Distortion had 80,000-100,000 visitors per day, becoming one of the largest annual gatherings in Europe.[5] In 2012, Distortion established Fonden Distortion København (the Copenhagen Distortion Foundation).

Distortion often invites local and international shops, labels, nightclubs, promoters, and magazines to host their own party through the week; over the years this has included Vice Magazine, Fabric – London, Resident Advisor, Adidas, Ed Bangers, Kompakt, Trouw – Amsterdam, Fact Magazine, and Red Bull Music Academy.[6]

Copenhagen's wildest street party music festival is back for 2022, and you are invited to Distortion!

After the excitement of the 21st birthday party back in 2019, then Covid cancellations, we are VERY excited to have one of the best festivals of the year happening again in 2022! Distortion kicks of the summer season with dancing in the street, plenty of live music, free events, and usually it's great weather! This festival is for anyone who likes dance music and a little organized chaos (the theme of Distortion has always been this) and you will find plenty of DJs and bands, including Danish acts and international artists too.

Can you bring alcohol to distortion?

Do I sound like an old angry man right now? Well, let me explain. I’m a musician as well as a photographer. I made a living as a professional musician many years ago. I’m deeply in love with music. I love Soul, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Metal, Pop and everything that inspires me. But I have a blank in my musical taste. I really love Drum’n Bass, because of its complex rhythms and its energy, but what I really dislike, is when you replace the drummer or the complex rhythms with a pounding bass drum on every single beat, banging away like a hammer, with no complexity what so ever. Just BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM….. The Distortion Festival is, apart from very few exceptions, just that. Among danish musicians it is referred to as the German Stomp. Because it sounds like marching Nazis.

You can tell that a lot of the music that are played from the different stages, are assembled by DJ’s and many without much musical training. It is not as horrible as it once was, but you regularly hear a song with a vocal hookline that are out of key with the bass and harmonies, if you can call it harmonies… To a musician, that is like dragging your nails across a blackboard.

I know that it is common to explain my dislike towards this techno / electro music, with the generation gap, where every new generation manages to make music that the older generation thinks is shit.

To me the laptop music at the Distortion festival goes a bit like this: You sort of set the pace with a super short intro, then introduce the pounding bass drum, shift between a handful of samples, and mixes it up a bit.

Then there is the part where you omit the bass drum, then later reintroduces it after a rally up. It is sort of the climax of the tune, called “dropping the bass”. In the most basic version, a really cheap sounding snare drum sample leads up to the reignited bass drum with a quantised snare roll. Some DJ’s let that roll continue for a while to heighten the tension amongst their audience and then drops the bass, meaning reintroducing it, with a couple of more layers on top of it.

So the electro sort of lives off a bit of dynamic tension, and a few samples. I’m sure every person who loves this kind of music or makes it, hates me by now. But hey, I don’t drink alcohol either, so that might be another reason. Play some Meshuggah and I will lighten up like a christmas tree with sheer delight. But a pounding bass drum on all 4 beats, brings me down immediately.

This term ‘distortion’ tends to get thrown around easily, without people actually knowing what it means.

Essentially, distortion is a form of audio processing that alters the waveform by increasing the gain into a device, like an amp, circuit or software algorithm.

Historically, it was used on instruments like electric guitars, but in modern times it can be used on anything to achieve a certain effect.

Can you board a plane tipsy?

TSA officers operate at airports and only airports. They are empowered to conduct screenings of people, baggage and cargo. This means that when you enter the airport, you can be searched by a TSA officer, along with your bags, both on your person and checked bags.

Can you board a plane hungover?

  • Drink Water. When possible, drink at least one glass of water per alcoholic beverage, advises frequent traveler Pippa Ushio. Hydration with any non-alcoholic beverage is key. “A lot of our East Coast clients have that Sunday or Monday morning 6 a.m. flight, so they want to party at a nightclub until it closes at 4 a.m. and head to the airport after. We always recommend they order tonic water or club soda with lime right around the time the club closes to lessen the hangover during the flight,” said Rodric Hurdle-Bradford, managing partner of Las Vegas personal concierge service company VegasLuxuryVIP.com.
  • Know thyself. If you have been hungover before (and we bet that’s a good number of you), know the cures for what ails you. Ushio turns to hangover helpers Pedialyte, coconut water and over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen.“Pedialyte is a great rehydration tool, but it looks really odd when an adult drinks it and one wouldn’t want to carry it around on a regular basis,” said Ushio. Gatorade works wonders too, according to travel enthusiast Luke Orlando, who resides in Houston, Texas. “Before even heading to the airport, you should make sure to hydrate thoroughly. Water is good but Gatorade or Pedialyte is better due to the added electrolytes. As for nausea, taking a Dramamine or similar motion sickness medication will help,” advises Orlando.
  • Treat the symptoms. Whether its anti-nausea medication or a pain reliever (ibuprofen works best), you will likely feel better faster with some help.“The sooner you can keep a glass of liquids down with a pill, the better,” said blogger Ashley Migneault of tothewild.co. To combat nausea, Orlando recommends taking a motion sickness medication like Dramamine. He finds using a natural sleep supplement like melatonin is also helpful. Products created especially to treat the symptoms of hangovers, like First Aid Shots, can also provide relief.

Where should distortion be in pedal chain?

You can place your compression right at the start of your chain, or at the very end.

Your boost pedals should feature towards the front of your ’board, as they can be used to fatten up overdrives and fuzzes.

In much the same way that you’d use a clean boost to ‘kick’ a tube amp into saturation, overdrives and fuzzes are, at their heart, just amplification circuits. This means they can be made to saturate the signal by hitting them hard enough that they run out of headroom – as with an amp.

Since many pedals also use diodes for additional clipping, this will involve some trial and error. Stacking pedals isn’t an exact art, but the end results tend to be much richer than just using a single drive pedal.

Should distortion go before or after delay?

Is there truly a “best” order? Well, it’s certainly true that the way one pedal affects your signal will have an impact on what goes into the next pedal, and therefore also on what comes out of it, and so on and so forth.

So, in the sense that it makes a difference, and you will like the results of some setups more than others, the answer is “yes — sort of.” You’ll have to decide what pedal order gets you closest to the sound you’re looking for.

Did Kurt Cobain use distortion?

Earlier this week, we learned that Cobain’s stage-smashed Mustang fetched nearly $500,000 at a November 13 auction. Now it has emerged that in the same sale a battered Boss DS-1 stompbox belonging to the Nirvana frontman fetched an eye-watering sum of $75,000.

The remarkable figure is higher than that of Jimi Hendrix’s Roger Mayer-built Octavia, which was used on his iconic Band of Gypsys album and sold for $70,400 in December 2020. Cobain’s stompbox could well have set a new record for a guitar pedal sold at auction.
