The bodies have been preserved through a method known as plastination, which drains them of fluids before replacing them with silicone. This allows the skinned bodies to be exhibited in life-like poses.

In an open letter to Australian politicians, the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China says there is "credible evidence" that the bodies may belong to "executed prisoners and prisoners of conscience from China".

"We are astonished that visas and permits for bringing this exhibition into Australia were issued by the Australian Government, given the lack of documentation demonstrating ethical and legal sourcing of each body," the letter reads.

From June 24 until September 30, 2023 ANIMAL INSIDE OUT will be on diplay in the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken, Germany. Featuring a special collection of plastinates, ANIMAL INSIDE OUT reveals how intricate the blood vessels of animals are, what the muscular system and various organs of different animals look like, and how they compare to other animals, including humans. From goats to giraffes, squids to sharks and octopuses to ostriches, guests will discover the form and function of animals both exotic and familiar.

The exhibition is divided into six areas by biological systems – locomotive, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive and urinary/reproductive – to give guests an in-depth look at animals from a rarely seen perspective. Highlights of plastinates featured in ANIMAL INSIDE OUT include the world’s tallest mammal, the giraffe; the rarely seen giant squid; a magnificent bull, with its heart five times the size of a human’s; and a reindeer, with hooves that adapt to the changing seasons.

How long do plastinated bodies last?

In July 1977, I was working as a research scientist at the University of Heidelberg’s Institute of Pathology and Anatomy. Looking at specimens embedded in plastic – the most advanced preservation technique then available – I wondered why the plastic was poured around bodies rather than into them.

That was when I came up with the idea of vacuum-impregnation, whereby bodily fluids and soluble fat are extracted and replaced with resins, silicon rubbers and epoxies, a process I later named plastination. But it was only after a year of intense research, and hundreds of experiments, that I got some presentable results. By March 1978, I filed the first patent for plastination, a technique now used in 400 medical schools and universities worldwide (although the first whole-body plastinate was still 13 years away).

What is the difference between bodies the exhibition and real bodies?

The exhibit is set up so that one starts at the skeletal system, and more layers (muscular, nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems; as well as fetal development and the treated body) are added in successive rooms. Containing about twenty bodies in total, each exhibition uses real human bodies that have been preserved permanently by a process called "polymer preservation" (commonly referred to as "plastination") so that they will not decay. This exhibition is organized by the publicly traded corporation, Premier Exhibitions Incorporated, which also staged Bodies Revealed first in Seoul, South Korea and more recently in the US. The company received the cadavers for research from the Chinese government, who donated them because all the bodies, at the time of death, had no close next of kin or immediate families and remained unclaimed. The dissections took place at the Dalian University in Liaoning, China and the resulting specimens were leased to Premier Exhibitions for the five-year duration of the show.

Some of the specimens are arranged so that they are performing activities such as playing poker or conducting an orchestra. Along the way are other displays showing a human intestine stretched out, the polluted lung of an adult smoker, and all of the arteries and veins without the body itself. The exhibit of the polluted lung of the smoker also includes a clear standing box in which guests can discard their cigarettes and tobacco products after viewing the display. In the Las Vegas exhibit, there was also a polluted lung of a fetus on display. One section includes several fetuses in various stages of development. All of the fetuses died due to miscarriages, and the disorders which caused each are highlighted on most of the displays. Guests are notified by a small sign at the exhibit of the sensitivity of the fetus gallery just before entrance into the area, and given the option to skip that room if so desired.

The bodies are prevented from decaying by means of plastination, a rubberization process patented in the 1970s by anatomist Gunther von Hagens. The essence of the process is the replacement of water and fatty material in the cells of the body first by acetone and then by plastics, such as silicone rubber, polyester or epoxy resin.

The first floor is about the reproductive system. So there are images of people having sex, and also a male and female body preserved in the act showing actual penetration !!!! so it depends on how much your children know about this wether you wish to skip this floor or not, my kids are fully informed about this so it was fine !!!!

What is Plastination?The preservation and demonstration of anatomical specimens that retain much of their natural features has been a long-standing goal of anatomists, pathologists and other medical educators. Preservation of most biological tissues is performed using liquids such as formaldehyde, alcohol, and glycerin. Although these commonly used liquids are efficient, they have many disadvantages.

Plastination is a technique of tissue preservation developed by Gunther von Hagens in 1977 consists of forced impregnation of biological specimens with plastic resins. Plastinated specimens offer advantages over other methods of preservation because they are anatomically precise, clean, dry and easy to handle. These specimens provide an excellent tool for teaching anatomy and pathology, for patient education, and potentially as an augmentation to MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computer tomography) analysis. Specimens produced by plastination are dry, odorless, rather durable and usually free from encasing material.  

Do plastinated bodies last forever?

Plastination preserves human bodies in startling detail and with life-like results. The chemical process doesn’t change the human tissue whatsoever, and the flesh doesn’t degrade over time. Von Hagens’ idea is to use his technique for educational purposes towards the general public.

The painstaking process starts with traditional formaldehyde or other body-preserving chemicals. Scientists pump these chemicals through veins and arteries to kill any bacteria. Destroying the germs prevents degradation of the flesh. That injection process alone takes about three to four hours.
